Toffee Brown Sugar Bars

Our kitchen remodel is nearly complete and my husband and I are still married, which is sort of a miracle.

I have told him 40 hundred times that he’s doing things incorrectly…and he has told me 40 hundred and ONE times that I have no experience in hanging cabinets so my pie-hole should stay shutty.

I have repeated the phrase, “I cannot wait until the crown molding is up” at least 7 times a day since the project has started, just so he doesn’t forget to put the crown molding up…

And he has repeated the phrase, “pie-hole shutty” every. single. time.

Ok, he has never said pie-hole shutty…but that’s basically what I can hear his eyes saying when he looks at me.

Also, my husband would never say shutty.  Or pie-hole.

Anyway…I am starting to learn that when I repeat things over and over and over, for example, “can’t wait until the crown molding is up”, that is called “nagging”.

Which I like to refer to as “helpful reminders”.

We will never see eye to eye on that one.

And APPARENTLY husbands don’t like, “helpful reminders” when it comes to home improvement projects.  Or ever, really.

So yeah, we’re still married.

But the crown molding isn’t up yet.

I’ll let you know.

In the meantime let’s do something major with brown sugar and toffee.

Stacked brown sugar toffee bars on parchment paper

These bars are totally simple, but they have flavors that are in-your-face delicious.

Chewy, rich and buttery.  They are perfect and cozy.

I love dark brown sugar, and that’s what I used.  If you don’t love it, you can certainly sub in light brown sugar.

How to Make The Best Toffee Bars

Besides all the other usual suspects (eggs, butter, vanilla etc) you will need Toffee Bits.  I used the kind that are covered in milk chocolate, but you don’t have to.  Totally up to you!

Just mix up a quick batter and add your toffee…

See me there in the mixer bowl?

Yeah, I still wear black capri yoga pants.  I can’t quit them.

Here’s what your bars will look like…

Can you even…?  I mean…

  1. So good! Actually good use a wee bit more chocolate, in mY chocoholic opinion! Perfect time to bake, buttery, soft and very good!

  2. Ugh..i made these tonight. Baked them an extra 10 minutes.

Toothpick in center was clean…sides n top very nicely browned. No jiggling.

Let them cool, almost to room temp, cut some….goopy and runny enough to use a spoon and looked nearly raw. 🙁

Im beyond disappointed. They TASTE wonderful. The recipe even says to NOT overbake.

Wasted my money on expensive toffee bits and dark sugar i cant even eat what i baked.

This is the second timebive tried a wonderful looking and sounding recipe from a blogger with only comments of “look good” and ” gonna try”, but none have actually baked the recipe.

Dont think ill do that anymore.

  3. Funny. I was making your cake mix toffee bars as my husband gave me that same look when I made a very polite suggestion. I do believe I am not allowed into my husband’s thought processes unless it is his idea. And that is usually food and other stuff. So I made toffee bars…and that cake mix fudge the lady who commented on your toffee bars suggested. 🙂 We are having sugar for dinner. and soup.

  4. You’re killing me!
    Pie hole shutty.
OMG, I am laughing RIGHT OUT LOUD!
Between that and you talking about your reflection in the mixer bowl I never even LOOKED at the recipe!
    Aaaahhhhh…I needed that!
(Off to laugh some more! And maybe get a recipe or two…..!!)

I only had Skor bits (no chocolate) so I added semi and milk chocolate chips. And just because I like em, I also added 3/4 pack of chopped mini Reese’s cups. I was low on regular flour so I substituted 1 c regular white flour, 3/4 c ww flour and 3/4 c cake flour. Turned out amazing. I’ll definitely make these again and I may even do the flour substitution again.
