Milk Chocolate Whopper Brownies

If you all follow me on facebook then you are aware of my current situation.

I presently have no power due to Hurricane Irene.

I will not go on and on about how much it stinks to not have power…because I know you all get it.

AND we don’t have very much damage to our home, so I know we are very lucky.

MY OTHER RECIPES

Here’s the thing, though…as you all know I’m not an “outdoorsy” type…having just mused about that very subject a few weeks ago.

The thing about no power is it’s basically like camping, but worse.

It’s worse because I would imagine that camping is a choice…unless you are held hostage by Survivorman or something.

Being stuck inside, with no control over the power situation feels, well, powerless.

I have the light switches taunting me…the television looking all sad and blank…and my oven going is going through withdrawls.

I feel like I am in a episode of Little House on the Prairie and Nellie Oleson works at the power company…every time I call in she smiles, her curls bouncing up and down relishing the fact that I am having to actually use a pencil to write and read a real life book.

My kids are “getting back to basics” playing with things like jump ropes and marbles.  It’s only a matter of time before they start calling me “Ma” and asking to go to the General Store for a pack  of gum or Necco Wafers.  I know now that I was born in the appropriate century.  There is pretty much no way I could survive on a prairie.

To get my mind off the other issues in my life I decided to spend the afternoon at my Mother in Law’s house…

She presently has power and internet and is always more than willing to make me indebted to her  😉

So here are some brownies that I made a few weeks ago.  I have been waiting for the perfect opportunity to post them…and well, there’s no better time than the present!

While I always think you should make the stuff you see here, I have to say these are really good brownies.  Really good…and the frosting, oh my word..it’s awesome ~ tastes just like a Whopper thanks to the yummy addition of Ovaltine!

These are pretty easy brownies…straight forward…no funny business.

Chop up some Whoppers (chocolate malt balls)

Then melt your milk chocolate and butter together.  When it’s good and melty add your wet stuff, like eggs, vanilla and brown sugar.

Then add your dry stuff…flour, baking powder, Ovaltine etc,When all that’s mixed together fold in your Whoppers.

And spread it into your prepared pan.

Bake ’em up and then frost them with some yummy Chocolate Malt Frosting…or don’t, but you really should.

You can thank me later!

Quick notes

If you cannot find chocolate malt mix (Ovaltine) you can sub in malted milk powder.

Not having power sucks and you have all my thoughts and prayers. We lost it over the weekend due to Irene and its awful when its beautiful outside and it just feels like there isn’t any reason why you don’t have power. Maybe soon!

*…and Nellie Oleson works at the power company…* and (MIL) *She presently has power and internet and is always more than willing to make me indebted to her * had me laughing out loud.
Hope your power comes back on soon. In the meantime, baking at your MIL’s certainly turns out some gorgeous treats.

Oh drool! I love Whoppers (and I’m the only one in my house that does, so yay!) and I will be going to the store to buy some and some Ovaltine asap!

I adore these, and I laughed so much at the references to Little House. You are such a great comedic writer, and there’s nothing better than laughing over dessert! 🙂

I love whoppers!! These look so go amazing and chocolaty. Sorry to hear you still have no power. We are in North Eastern PA and while our power just flickered in and out all day Sunday several surrounding towns still having no power and some had their bridges washed out. What a mess. Hope your all hanging in there.

These looks yummy! Around here we lost power on Saturday night but thank God we had everything back on Sunday morning. I figure everything around my house was fine until I spoke with my friend who leaves 20 minutes from me and told me that some of her neighbors had to be evacuated by the fire department. Then on Monday, my 20 minutes commute to work turn out to be 3 hours! all roads were pretty much close, after almost peeing in myself ( you know a prego thing this last few weeks) I made it to the office to… Read more »

I am so sorry you are still without power. Your comparison with camping made me laugh. So did talking about your TV looking sad. I hate when we are without power. Good luck on getting it back on and all the clean-up from mean Irene.

These brownies look fab! I need to do more baking with malted items. 🙂

Oh Wow! Those brownies look incredible. The frosting really looks awesome and I can’t wait to try. Glad to hear that everyone is okay, but I totally know how you feel about the power being off. The first things I freak out about when the power goes out is my hair dryer and my oven!! Hope it comes on real soon!!!

Very glad to hear that you and yours are doing well! Even though it’s pretty sucky to have no power. Hopefully everything gets back to normal soon!

Little House on the Prairie is pretty much my favorite thing. Ever. HOWever, I do not last more than 5-6 hours in the great outdoors. And that’s under optimal weather conditions. We went on a field trip today. It’s Alaska so it was a hike. In the rain. It was the longest 2 hours ever.

The brownies look delicious and I hope your house/electricity is back to normal soon!

I literally just had to swallow some drool. Gross. I’m gross.
Nice work on these! I hope you get your power back soon! I know how that sucks. It’s only when we are without it that we realize how much we depend on it.

I cannot believe you are STILL without power! I am not a good camper as well which is why I was so DAMN AFRAID that my power was going to go out. My roommates just couldn’t understand. But, uh. They camp.

If you want to come over and use my internet, you are more than welcome to! It’s not THAT long of a trip to NYC, right?

I love malted milk balls! I’ve gone a little Maltesers crazy recently and I’m craving these brownies so much now!

Hope your power comes back on soon. Whenever our power goes out I forget and go round turning on light switches and being momentarily confused as to why they don’t work.

Wow – those pictures… and your situation makes me cringe for you. I hope everything gets restored for you and the others very soon. The only time we’ve ever been without power for an extended period of time is in the winter during ice storms. I can imagine how hot and smelly everything is around those parts!

We LOOVE whoppers, my late mother in law ALWAYS had them by her side lol……I’ll have to make these for the family in her memory!

Hope you’re up and running again real soon Shelly!

Oh man….being without power is NOT fun. Although, your post is cracking me up! 😉 When Ike hit here a few years ago, I was excited to “hunker down.” We had chocolate, we had snacks, it would be fun, right?!? Wrong. The novelty wore off after about a hour. We were all out STILL cleaning up the mess in our yards, days later, and a lady down the street burst out of her house yelling, “MY CEILING FAN IS TURNING!!!” So funny…the power coming back on was like winning the lottery. The brownies look amazing…and GORGEOUS pictures, Shelly!

m’kay . . . let’s look on the bright side of things . . . from this experience you’ll know how long you can go without washing your hair . . . you’ll know how to flush a toilet w/only a bucket . . . you’ll know where to buy the best long-burning candles . . . how long a flashlight batter actually lasts . . . how many variations of the ‘hobo-dinners’ you can make in a week . . . yep, i’d say you’ll be able to lead a whole pack of girl scouts to victory in the… Read more »

Whoppers! Love ’em! I hope your power returns soon, it is NOT fun I know. On Christmas Day 2000, an ice storm hit east Texas and Arkansas. Our whole area was out, completely unreal. I live in the middle of my city and was out of power for 17 days! I was so glad to have my blow dryer and curling iron back!! Just remember, all are safe and this too shall pass!

Just wanted to let you know that I did indeed try these out over the holiday weekend and they turned out fantastic! I did everything just as you said and trusted your awesome recipe writing skills, and I was happily rewarded with perfect brownies 🙂 (this is actually the first time I have ever down brownies from scratch -gasp! I know) We took them to my boyfriend’s family and they were a huge hit (I get the feeling I’ll be making them again soon). Thanks again for the recipe!
