The best?

I feel like I have spent a good part of my adult life (thus-far) chasing the best (whatever) or the perfect (something).  If a magazine is boasting “The BEST”…Most likely I will buy that magazine.  Let’s see:
The BEST kid’s toys
The BEST new makeup
The BEST jeans for your butt
The BEST vacation
and the list goes on and on…
Now, I consider myself a smart-ish individual, and I recognize that all these lists are purely marketing ploys to get me to buy whatever is the latest “BEST”, but I fall for it.
Pretty much every time.
Because, ya know, what if it IS the BEST?
I wouldn’t want to miss out on that!
So here’s what has happened…I now have a drawer full of all the BEST mascaras, a closet full of all the BEST jeans and a basement full of the BEST toys guaranteed to make my kids geniuses.
I’m a sucker.
Another trend I have noticed…or maybe it’s not a trend…is everyone claiming they have the BEST Chocolate Chip cookie recipe.
Here’s the thing, though..as soon as I think I have found the BEST chocolate chip cookie recipe, someone comes along with something a little different that is also THE BEST, so I feel almost obligated to give it a try…in the name of research and all.
Needless to say, I have made lots and lots of chocolate chip recipes.  And I mean lots.  Having 4 boys we bake chocolate chip cookies no less than twice a week.  Seriously.
We’ve tried all the different combinations:
All butter, all shortening, a mix of both…milk chips, semi-sweet chips, bittersweet chips…nuts, no nuts…oats, no oats, egg yolks, whole eggs…
the list goes on and on.
Here’s my hypothesis though: most people probably like the type of cookie that their mom made growing up.
 Right?
That’s why I haven’t ever posted a chocolate chip cookie recipe before this one.  I wanted to make sure it was seriously good.
So, there never really will be a BEST, and in my opinion the more the merrier…
Different Strokes Different Folks…
You say Potato…
anyway
Give these a try…a big chocolate filled cookie that certainly won’t disappoint.
I don’t dare say THE BEST, but I will say that they are pretty darn good.
This isn’t a typical recipe…there are a few ingredients that you might go, “huh?” about…but be a believer…you won’t know any of those things are in this cookie…it just tastes GOOD!
So get out your big scoop and bake up, people!
MY Latest and Greatest Favorite Chocolate Chip cookie recipe.
(adapted from Taste of Home)
1 cup shortening
1/2 cup softened butter
1 1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 eggs
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon lemon juice
3 cups AP flour
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (don’t be scared)
5 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Combine dry ingredients (set aside)
Cream butter, shortening and both sugars until fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time beating after each.
Beat in vanilla and lemon juice.
Add in dry ingredients and on low mix until combined.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Refrigerate overnight.
(I know this stinks, but do it)
Preheat to 350.
Line baking sheets with parchment.
Using 1/4 cup measuring cup, or ice cream scoop, place dough about 2 inches apart on lined baking sheet.
Bake for 12-14 minutes, until cookies begin to golden up on top and around edges.
Let cool on sheet for 2 minutes and then transfer to cooling rack.
Makes approx 28 large cookies
This recipe calls for cinnamon.  Don’t be scared.  In the baked cookie, you can’t really taste it, but it gives the cookie a little something.  Trust me, I am an expert.
Also, please line your baking sheets with parchment.  It really makes a difference in the baking process, plus it keeps your cookie sheets clean. Win-win!
Now, while we are on the topic of cookies, after you make these cookies, grab a glass of milk and go buy this adorable T-shirt…
Yes, this is me…please don’t judge the messy hair…it’s all in the name of cookies.
The cookie is saying, “I love you” to the milk.
Isn’t it the cutest?  The cool folks over at  threadless.com sent it to me, with a super awesome pair of matching Havaians.
Every time I have worn this shirt I have people stop me and ask where I got it or tell me how cute it is.  What fun it is to have cookies on my belly and IN my belly 😉
Do you have a favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe?

I wanna know!

Awww, you're too cute! You look WAY young to be a mama of 4!

Like you, any recipe with "Best" in the title catches my eye…but not for the reason you might think. I'm not afraid of missing out, but instead I'm like, "Best?? Oh, REALLY. Let's see about that." haha

Right now I'm a fan of the NY Times famous chocolate chip cookie (you know, the one that had the internet abuzz a while back). The trick is to let the dough rest in the fridge for at least 36 hours before baking. Torture, I know!

  2. Joanne

I'm a sucker for BEST also. And top ten. I like things that have top ten lists.

Okay so these are the BEST. We shall see about that! They certainly look truly awesome.

  3. Kate

I love your shirt and flip flops and I most definitely will be trying this recipe! Ps. I agree with Kitchen Koala, you look young and tiny to be the momma of 4 kids 🙂

  4. Tia

It's funny how there seems to be a neverending quest for THE perfect CCC recipe. I do it, you do it, lots of bakers are constantly on the search… lol…. and thankfully it's a tasty serach!

I hate to admit it, but my MIL makes the best CCC ever. They are so flipping delicious. Just don't ever tell her I told you that 🙂

This is the first time I see a picture of you. You are a beautiful lady. Some how I imagine you with very short gray hair, don't know why. Sorry:(. Now I know who you are!! I will try this cookie recipe for sure. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Mimi

I'm alway willing to try a new CC cookie recipe. Kitchen Koala was right on you are young, and cute also pretty darn funny.

Nope, you know me I'm not into baking cookies just eatin' 'em. I really need to get over that. My poor kiddos are cookie deprived.

I get sucked in by "the best" and top 10 lists. Diggin' the cool tee!

Like you I'm totally a sucker for "THE BEST' of anything.

I think the best chocolate chip cookie is the still warm out of the oven one I'm eating at the time.

These look yummy and really who could be scared of a little bit of cinnamon.

I am the same way, always after the best but I always end up back to what I was using to begin with… :(.

I will definitely be trying this recipe…never can have too many chocolate chip cookies!!

  11. Domestic Sugar

My mom passed me the greatest cc cookie recipe… and it is simple.

Cream 1c sugar and 1 cup butter/margarine. Add 2 eggs, 1 tbsp vanilla, 1tsp baking soda, 1c brown sugar (loose). Mix.
Add 2.5c flour, and 1/2 pkg chocolate chips. Bake at 350 for 10 min. YUM! Seriously.. BEST RECIPE EVER!

It's fun to see the woman behind all the creativity! That is a great shirt.
I think all chocolate chip cookies are "the best"! I'll bookmark this recipe for that bag of chocolate chips hiding in the freezer.

It is nice to see you. For some reason, I visualized you with dark hair. You are so pretty and look so cute in that adorable shirt. Love the flip-flops too. Of course, your cookies look amazing. Interesting that it has lemon in it. I do have a favorite cookie…the so-called Neiman-Marcus cookie. Some day I will post it:) Yours sounds even better, though.

  14. Kristie Maynard

    Love the shirt, how adorable!
I've tried a few different recipes, but I always go back to the one that is on the package of Nestles Tollhouse chips. Just can't help myself, I love them.

  15. Sue

These look like my kind of cookie…nice and thick! YUM! I feel kind of deprived because I don't remember my mom ever making chocolate chip cookies!

Can't wait to try this cookie recipe! My son has that shirt and we always get compliments, too! Threadless has some great ones!

  23. grace

yes to the cinnamon! i don't think i'll ever pinpoint a favorite–after all, it's butter, sugar, and chocolate all happily married. who can be picky?

  24. Shannon

Lemon juice??! Cinnamon? Ok, I have to try these. They look really really good!!! I'm happy to see shortening in there, I think it helps to make a great cookie!

  25. Jaime

they look like awesome CCC's but i can't get past the shortening…trying to get away from that. boo. so, i'll have to pass on these but i do have to say that you look so cute in that tee! 🙂

  26. Baking Momma

I am too always making CCC in my house. I have tried a few recipes. But I have one that I have been making for years. My husband does'nt want anything but those cookies. No matter what. To him those are always the best. Recently I changed up the recipe. My son and I love it!. But my husband still wants the same one. Not because the second recipe isn't good. But the second recipe no matter what you do. They will not get crispy and the first one we have an option chewy or crispy. So you guessed it. Now I am stuck making two batches of cookies! Awesome shirt. You are adorable. Love the flip flops. Here in Florida that is all we wear lol

  27. Molly

5 cups of chocolate chips!! That's awesome!

Love the shirt! I have tried many "best" chocolate chip cookie recipes, and I can't wait to try this one too. I need a perfect cookie recipe for a Labor Day picnic, and this is what I'm going to make – I trust you!

  28. baking.serendipity

I love those flip flops! I too am a total victim of marketing…and admittedly fall for schemes even beyond the "best" advertising. Your cookies look delicious!

  29. Meredith

l baked these cookies the day after l read this post! The cinnamon is really delish in them! Love the T-shirt and flip-flops.

  30. Amy of Sing For Your Supper

Well…looks like I'll be trying yet another ccc recipe! These look fabulous!!! I *love* that shirt, too!!

  31. Amy

I'm scared of shortening (I can't get past the trans fat) – I know that it's probably necessary for the BEST CCC, but how much butter should I substitute for it for the 2nd best CCC?

    Thanks!

  32. cookies and cups

Amy ~ yes, I used to be scared of shortening in cookies too. I thought "blech, butter all the way", but I really like how the combo works together..you get the buttery crisp without all the spreading.
But if you want to stick with all butter, no worries, just sub it out in equal amounts. 1 cup = 1 cup.

  33. Summer McCain

Any ideas on how to make this at high altitude? I've done some research, but thought if someone has already experimented…..???

    Thanks!

  34. Tampa CCC Mom

Four eggs???/ Really? I’m afraid to use so many eggs in a cookie recipe. Is the cookie pics really the end result of your “best” cookie with the four eggs?

I consider myself a c.c.c. connoisseur and for me a flat chocolate chip cookie is a no go so the pic above, of your cookies, look amazing. I guess I will need to try the recipe to see for myself…but four eggs??? lol

    1. Shelly

Yes, the pictures are the cookies that I made using the recipe!
I really love these cookies because they aren’t a typical ccc, but so so good!

  35. Rachel

you’re right about the best chocolate chip biscuit being the one your mum made when growing up, mine is exactly that. But I adapted my mums recipe and added coffee essence. I’m a huge coffee fan, so coffee in a choc chip cookie is the best to me.

I’ll definitely have to try these biscuits though!
