Why Is It Called a Sheet Cake?

Simple Ingredients

Melt the Butter

Whisk together butter, cocoa powder, and water in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil, then remove from heat.

Combine

Add the dry ingredients to a large bowl. Pour in the hot butter mixture and stir to combine.

Add Buttermilk

Mix in the buttermilk, whisked eggs, and vanilla.

Bake

Pour the cake batter into a greased baking pan and bake for 20 minutes.

Make the Icing

Again, melt butter in a saucepan, and whisk in the cocoa, milk, and vanilla.

Add Powdered Sugar

Take the pan off the heat and stir in the powdered sugar, and pecans if you’re using them.

Frost the Cake

When your cake is hot from the oven, pour the icing on right away and spread it all over.

Serve

Cut into squares and dig in! Store airtight at room temp for up to 3 days.
