Description
This snowman cake tutorial turns a chocolate layer cake into a winter wonderland! It’s an easy Christmas cake topped with adorable snowman cake pops made from mini donuts and chocolate chips.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Cake
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus the ingredients listed on the box) *See note
- 1 recipe of my chocolate buttercream frosting
To Decorate
- 4 cake pop sticks
- 12 powdered sugar donut holes
- Mini chocolate chips
- Orange candy-coated sunflower seeds (or orange Mini M&Ms)
- Fruit leather (like Fruit by the Foot)
Instructions
To Make the Cake
- Grease two 8- or 9-inch cake pans with cooking spray, and set aside.
- Prepare the cake batter according to the directions on the box.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake the cakes according to the package directions. Let the cakes cool completely.
To Assemble
- Prepare a batch of chocolate buttercream frosting.
- Place your first cake layer on a plate or cake board. Using a large open-round piping tip or an offset spatula, pipe or spread buttercream over the first layer. Place the second cake layer on top.
- Use the remaining frosting to frost the top and sides of the cake.
To Decorate
- Carefully thread the donut holes onto the cake pop sticks, 3 donuts per stick. Make sure that you don’t poke the stick through the top donut.
- Gently press the mini chocolate chips onto the donuts as eyes and buttons. You can use a small dollop of chocolate buttercream on the back of the chocolate chips to help them adhere.
- Place a small orange candy on each snowman’s face as the nose.
- Next, cut the fruit leather into 4-inch strips. Gently wrap each strip around the “neck” of the snowman.
- Press the ends of the cake pop sticks into the cake so that the snowmen stand upright, with the bottom donut flush with the frosting on the cake.
- Dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar.
