Blizzard Bars

Three blizzard bars stacked on a napkin

So let me tell you a secret.

I lied for the first time ever about my age the other day.

And I feel weird and ashamed about it.

Here’s the scenario…

I was at the salon getting my hair done and I was talking to the girl who does facials there.  I was complaining about the stupid wrinkles that I am getting around my stupid eyes and asking her about miracle treatments that can be done so I look like I’m 18 again.  Or even 28.  Whatever.

Anyhow, she asked me how old I was.  It wasn’t a rude question and fit in with the context of the discussion, but I honestly froze.  And then lied.

I told her I was ONE YEAR younger than I am.  WHY WOULD I DO THAT?  ONE YEAR?  Not FIVE years?  Dumb.

What in the world difference does one year make?  Let me answer that.  It makes no difference…

But I did it, and then instantly I was unable to make eye contact with her.  So yeah, I’m pretty sure she knew I was lying, and not only that, I’m pretty sure that she thinks that I am WAY older than what I said.  So basically I have the urge now to tell her that I was mistaken, and completely forgot about 2012, making me a whole year older than I claimed to be, which sounds way more liar-y than if I had just told her the truth in the first place.

And also, why would I lie to someone who I am talking to about my wrinkles??  Wouldn’t telling her I’m younger than I am be a WORSE scenario?  Like oh honey, yeah you look way older than that?!  I should have said that I am 65 and then let her compliment me on how young I look.

Ugh.

Moral of the story…never lie.

The end.

Anyway I decided when I got home I needed to make treats, that would make me fat, which will ultimately fill in all the wrinkles.

My mind is a scary place to live.

Blizzard Bars.  Make them and live wrinkle free.

Blizzard Bars | Cookies and Cups

I’m calling these Blizzard Bars for 2 reasons.

One, because we just had a blizzard and I made them on that day.  I know, boring.

Second because you can totally add ANY mix in you want, just like the DQ Blizzards.

M&Ms?  Yep, those would work.

Oreo chunks?  Totally.

Twix?  Yes please.

I narrowed it down to a few of my favorites:  chocolate, caramel and peanut butter cups.

What’s best about these is that that they are crazy easy.

Watch….

Baking ingredients including graham cracker crumbs, butter, sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips and mini peanut butter cups

All you need are a few things:
I even bought graham cracker crumbs in a box because I was feeling lazy.

A stick of butter melting in a baking dish in the oven
Graham cracker crumbs with a pinch of salt in a measuring cup
Sweetened condensed milk being poured from a can
Sweetened condensed milk over graham cracker crumbs in a baking dish
Caramel bits on top of sweetened condensed milk and graham cracker crumbs in a baking dish
Chocolate chips being poured from a measuring cup into a baking dish of sweetened condensed milk and caramel bits
Blizzard bars in a baking dish with chocolate chips and toffee bits

To make this a one pan from start to finish dessert, I melted my butter in my 9×13 while the oven was preheating.
When the butter is melted, add in your graham cracker crumbs and a pinch of salt.
Mix that together and press into the pan to create your crust.
Next pour a whole can of sweetened condensed milk on top…
Carefully spread it so it covers the crust.
Next it’s time for your add ins. I started with Caramel Bits…
Then some chocolate chips
Just make sure everything is evenly distributed…
Then bake it up!

Trader Joe's mini peanut butter cups in a plastic container

When it was done I topped it with some peanut butter cups. I used these little cuties I found at Trader Joe’s
I added these after I baked them because I didn’t want the peanut butter cups to melt.

So as soon as the bars came our of the oven I sprinkled them on, so they would melt enough to stick, but not enough that they wouldn’t hold their shape…
Just let them cool completely…I actually stuck them in the fridge to speed up the process…and then cut into bars.
Yum.

  1. Anything with sweetened condensed milk is delish! I also love Trader Joes!

    Another great recipe, you’re a genius…just say’n!

  2. If there was a blizzard right now, where I live I would make a tray of these and eat one, or ten. They look awesome.

  3. This look so good, wish I had any of these ingredients to make them. If it makes you feel better my granny lied about her age for like 50 years, and only off by one year! She finally came clean when my mom took her to the er after she broke her arm. By that time she was in her 70’s! She said it was because she was older than my grandfather- but I doubt that…

  4. Those look so delicious! I have lied about my age before because I literally forgot that I had recently had a birthday..lol

  5. I wish I had those bars during the blizzard! I always make magic bars aka layer bars with coconut but caramel and pb cubs is an awesome addition !

Wishing I was in that blizzard so I wouldn’t have to feel guilty about staying in and eating the whole batch! 😉

  7. I loved the story about lying about your age. My mother used to do that all the time. I remember one day the minister was in our living room, having a nice visit, and age came up. My mother said she was 21, chuckling while she said it. I, being the big-mouthed brat that I was, jumped into the conversation and said … but mom, you can’t be 21, you were 30 when I was born, and I am 6, so you have to be 36. Dead silence. The minister coughed and politely changed the subject. I think I am lucky he was there. Mom looked ready to ‘kill.’ She always said that she really didn’t know how old she was when she died because she had lied about it so much she had forgotten how old she really was.

If we weren’t heading out of town, I’d make these goodies tonight. They will have to wait until we get back. I guess I can wait that long.

  8. I’m laughing so hard right now! WHY!? Why do we freeze like that in the moment?! I have done it myself – and I swear it never pays. And yet…

Thanks for the miracle wrinkle cure.

I hear you on the wrinkles around the eyes. I have no idea where mine came from. Though I hear they come from smiling so much. Whatever the case, I need these blizzard bars to fill them up. Totally making these. I have a feeling they will hit my insatiable chocolate craving.

  10. Haha! Love your story and I’m going to remember it when I start getting wrinkles! Well, I’m almost 38 so maybe I already have some, or maybe I’m lying to myself! Oh no, better go get some choclate! 🙂
