Chocolate Covered Cheerios

Overhead view of chocolate covered cheerios in a heart-shaped dish

Here before you lies an epic battle of man vs cereal.

You see over the holidays I was at a friend’s house and she had this insanely sweet snack mix set out.

In this snack mix there was the addition of white chocolate covered Cheerios.

Well, I might have been the girl that picked them all out of the mix, leaving behind the graham crackers and peanuts for everyone else.

I know, I know, no one likes THAT girl.

Sorry.

Well, I decided that there needed to be a mix of only chocolate covered Cheerios and then all my problems would be solved and I wouldn’t be THAT girl anymore.

Simple solution.

Until.

Until I started dipping the Cheerios into the chocolate.

Well, I then discovered why the Cheerios were the minority player in the snack mix.

Because dipping individual Cheerios is not a super fun time.

But I decided that I was gonna make it happen…

I tried all sorts of different methods here…because covering them in chocolate isn’t the hard part.. it’s getting them not to stick together.

Obviously they would be equally as tasty in clusters, but I wanted individual tiny snack pieces.

No, you’re not the first person to call me OCD.

Cheerios in a red measuring cup

I tried dipping them and removing them on a slotted spoon.  Didn’t work for me, they all stuck together.

Tried lining them on twine and dipping them.  Didn’t work, they all stuck together and the twine got gross..

Tried lining them on a skewer and dipping them.. yep, you got it, they all stuck together.

Tried pouring the chocolate over the Cheerios on a wire rack…Cheerios stuck to the wire rack and the bottoms stayed naked. 1/2 naked Cheerios are not acceptable.

Cheerios in a cup of melted chocolate

So here’s what I did…

I dipped them, and fished them out with a fork and tapped and tapped and tapped all the excess chocolate…

Then I used a skewer and removed them from the fork one by one…
And put them on a piece of parchment paper to dry…
Then I repeated the whole process with white chocolate.
THEN my kids came home and started eating them by the handful and I got a little murdery and irrational.
So make these as a cute cupcake garnish, or as an addition to snack mix or if you’re feeling generous with your time for someone you like a lot, an entire bowl of chocolate covered Cheerios.

Which brings me to today’s special occasion…

  1. Ah! It irks me to no end when I’ve spent a bajillion days decorating and painstakingly creating a work of edible art, and my dad puts his hand out (no joke), waits for me to plop a slice of whatever it is I’ve made, and shoves the thing in his mouth whole. But fantastic job with these cheerios–you’ve got the patience of, well, a very good mum. I don’t know if I could make them in anything other than clusters, but I’ll give it a shot!

  2. Melissa @ Treats With a Twist

So I saw chocolate-covered Cheerios in a store once, and I got all big headed “I’m totally going to go home and make these myself!”
Then…I stumbled into problems like you did, said it totally wasn’t worth it, and ate the Cheerios for breakfast the next morning instead.
I’m glad you stuck with it because these look so good! Almost tempting enough to make me want to try to make them… again 🙂

So, I guess since it’s Cheerios, I can make them for myself, but pretend I made them for a toddler?! And I’m totally leaving them in clumps.

This made me laugh! I was ready to go make some until I read about your dilemma of dipping individual cheerios… We made peanut butter balls over Christmas and I got tired of dipping those! And they are significantly larger than a cheerio!

  5. I would be very murdery if someone ate an entire handful of my carefully dipped chocolate cheerios. I mean, kid or not, that’s just grounds for murder.

  6. They look delicious, but, quite frankly, too much work for me. What if you made them like the puppy chow/muddy buddies recipe????

  7. Julie @ Table for Two

i’m dying for a handful of these – although, they might just melt, so i think eating them all immediately with a large spoon will solve this issue.

hmmm, I think I will make these as clusters! Patience…I have not. But we love cheerios around here. And chocolate of course.

    1. We make our chocolate covered cheerios as “clusters”. Just mix the cheerios and melted chocolate chips together until covered, dip out spoonfuls onto waxed paper and refrigerate. (Sometimes they don’t all make the refrigerator!)
