Honey Citrus Grilled Chicken with Basil Butter

Honey Citrus Grilled Chicken Recipe with Basil Butter is next level delicious. So many flavors all packed into one really simple dish! The bright citrus chicken paired with the rich, savory butter is the perfect balance! It’s really the best grilled chicken recipe ever!

We all need a good Grilled Chicken Recipe we can rely on!

We have a few grills at our house…all for different purposes (or at least that’s what my husband tells me). I have a propane grill that I use regularly. I like the ease of pushing a button and having it turn on. I’m not huge into dealing with fire or charcoal or all the waiting…

My husband has a charcoal grill and a thing called a Big Green Egg which both require a lot of fiddling…at least I assume they require fiddling because my husband is always poking and temperature taking and standing around the grills when he uses them. I do love the taste that a charcoal grill gives food, but life doesn’t give me all the time, so push button grilling is where I’m at. Long story short, we’re grill hoarders.

Which brings me to today and this chicken. You know I love a good chicken recipe, and this is best grilled chicken, if I do say so myself. I love a citrus chicken. Like love. It’s my most favorite type of marinade and perfect for the warmer months. But I decided that wasn’t enough. Oh no it wasn’t. Let’s amp this whole situation up with Basil Butter…which you will want to slather on your whole life. Trust me.

It’s all about real, minimal ingredients that pack a big punch in this Honey Citrus Grilled Chicken Recipe…

I have had herbed butters on steaks a time or two and it’s flipping fantastic, but why should steak have all the fun? No way, man. Chicken needed in on the herb butter game. Let’s discuss.

Lemons and Limes chopped in half

Why is the the best Grilled Chicken Recipe?

I buy citrus fruit all the time. We use it in SO many things around the house…guac, water, salad dressing, seafood… Mixing both lemons and limes in the marinade gives it a super bright flavor and cut with the honey it really makes for a sweet, but not overly sweet flavor.

Mix up the marinade (it will only take a minute) and pour it over your chicken. Let it soak in all that goodness for at least 3 hours.

In the meantime let’s get that Basil Butter going. This can be made way in advance which is fantastic.

Basil and Butter being mixed together

The Basil Butter that goes on top of this Honey Citrus grilled chicken recipe is super simple, just mix together fresh basil, salt, pepper, garlic powder and fresh basil. It really adds something extra special to the chicken!

Creamy Basil Butter

When you’re ready to eat, get that chicken on the grill!

Chicken on the grill topped with citrus juice

I grill for 5-6 minutes on each side of my boneless, skinless chicken breasts…but that will vary on the thickness of your chicken.

When you’re done serve it up warm!

Make sure you have your delicious Basil Butter ready…

I make sure my butter is room temperature when serving, it will spread much easier!

Whipped basil butter

And smear a little bit on your warm honey citrus grilled chicken and watch it melt. The butter leaves a silky, rich finish to the chicken that is totally next level.

  1. I absolutely love this recipe. My limes and lemons were dry so I added the juice from a Tangelo. I also added the zest of all the citrus. I had agave instead of honey and this is my new favorite recipe. It’s absolutely perfect. I made extra butter and covered warm grilled Brussels sprouts with it. Delish. We are arguing over the leftovers.

  2. Could the honey be substituted for agave or molasses? We do BLW so my son eats what we do for dinner, but since he isn’t a year old yet he can’t have honey. The recipe sounds amazing and I’m always looking for new meals to cook

  3. I made this last night for a family birthday and it was a big hit, such great flavors! Definitely a keeper!

  4. I made this on the New Year eve and my husband loves it. I used Yemeni Sidr Honey instead and it tasted so well. I can’t wait to try it over again.

  5. Made this last night and it was so delicious. The basil butter is wonderful on French bread, too. Love your blog. Love your cookbook. You may live in New Jersey, but you cook like a Southern girl–and they are the BEST!

  6. I marinated this yesterday for a quick grilling session last night (after I painted our deck!) and it’s SOOO good! Brought it with me cold today and let my co-workers try it and they each requested the recipe 🙂 Delicious. Definitely on the keeper list!

  7. I made this Friday night and it was amazing. I used the leftover chicken on a salad. I even used some of the remaining butter on steaks I cooked a few days later. This recipe will be in heavy rotation through the summer. Thanks for sharing!
