My Kids Favorite Brownies

My kid's favorite brownie recipe ever@

These are my kids favorite brownies! It’s such a simple brownie recipe guaranteed to be a hit!

So this homemade brownie recipe is a family classic…One of those things that my mom made for me growing up. And when she passed away a few years ago I never really thought about them again, honestly.  I mean, I do have an amazing brownie recipe of my own.

Anyhow, I was on Pinterest a while back and saw a photo of a brownie that looked like the brownies I remembered eating as a kid…a crusty frosted brownie that was dense and chewy! Luckily I have all my mom’s recipe boxes and was able to find the brownie recipe card!  It looks like she got the recipe from a church friend…it’s one of those recipes that I am sure was passed around a lot in the 80s.

I made these brownies for my kids and they quickly declared them their favorite…I think it’s because of their mild chocolate flavor, no coffee or espresso…with a frosting that’s not too thick. You see, you frost the brownies while they are still warm so the frosting half absorbs into the top of the brownie…it’s awesome! The consistency is chewy, and thick…and with the frosting on the top they are perfectly sweet.

These are a fantastic and easy Homemade Brownie Recipe!

Chocolate Frosted Homemade Brownies

How do you make my Kid’s Favorite Brownies?

  • Mix the melted butter, cocoa powder, eggs and vanilla together it will begin to thicken up, so make sure you mix it enough!
  • Then add sugar and flour, and spread it into a prepared pan.
  • These bake up very evenly, which is so great!
  • While they’re baking make your frosting.  And then spread that all over the top while the brownies are still warm. This makes some of the frosting melt right into the top of the brownies. YES!

Love this recipe and I’ve made it so many times since it’s been posted. It always turns out and we use 3/4 cup of butter instead of the 1 cup. I’ve also made it with alternative flours, egg replacement, and coconut oil. It still turns out well.

Love these brownies! I followed the recipe exactly, but cooked for about 5 additional minutes (I usually have to do this with my oven) and they came out perfect. Planning on making another batch this afternoon to bring to my daughter’s office tomorrow and again next week for a party. So easy and delicious!

Made these yesterday because I actually had all the ingredients on hand!! They are so delicious!! My son raved about them and declared them the best brownies ever! Very rich and fudgy. I like how it makes a lot of servings, so great for a party! Keeper recipe….thank you!!

  4. Shelly,
If I could give this recipe more than 5 stars…..I surely would. This is one of the simplest, most delicious brownie recipes I have ever made. We had company for five days and I was looking for a quick dessert that would please everyone. Well…..this certainly did. Does fighting over whose brownie was bigger or how many somebody already had count as a keeper recipe? I sure think so. Simply amazing recipe. Thanks for sharing.

LOVE these brownies! I added chocolate chips to the batter becuase why not! I did increase the baking time by 10+ minutes becuase the middle wouldn’t set. When I frosted them I realized they were still pretty gooey so I refrigerated for a bit and that did the trick. They were so delicous…like if brownies and fudge had a baby. Perfect superbowl party treat!

Let me first say, I have loved everything I have tried on your website; however, something went terribly wrong with these. After 25 minutes I pulled them from the oven and they were no where near done. I put them in another 15 and thought they were done but nope…..I will say I love the flavor so any hints would be nice as to what I did wrong. My oven is only a year old so I know that wasn’t the issue. By any chance would the foil have impacted the cooking time?

    1. Shelly

That’s SUPER strange! I bake mine with foil every time and have never had an issue at all…I would totally buy a small oven thermometer and place it in your oven and just make sure it’s holding temperature. I have one that I picked up on amazon for like $5 that I check my oven from time to time to make sure it’s accurate.

Thank you Shelly for the quick response. I am totally going to make these again today. Just love your website and great receipes.

    Hello.
New to following you. I make Hersheys syrup brownies from scratch. Frost with Hersheys Cocoa powder frosting.
Very old from early 1980s or late 1970s Hersheys cookbook…
They are moist chewy thick cake like. Freeze well. I make 2pans at a time. My guys love them. Next time I may put Hersheys choco chips on top.

Made this for 72 2nd grade kids (with their teachers) and they all loved it. Crisp on the outside but chewy on the inside, it is perfect for me. Although i added baking soda and salt because i wanted it to rise just a little bit. Also, I skipped the frosting ‘cos i was worried it will turn out too sweet.

The type of flour was never clarified in the comments nor the recipe so I used APF. I also had a bit of trouble with baking time. Mine took closer to 28 minutes to cook. I followed ingredients exactly. Anyhow. I think it will a big hit with my 3rd grader’s classmates. Thanks for the great recipe!

Seriously made these brownies the same day I printed the recipe! These taste AMAZING! Definitely a HUGE step above the boxed brownies that just don’t have thAT fudgy chocolately goodness! My son LOVED them especially once we put rainbow sprinkles on top. Can’t wait to try your other brownie recipes as well. Yum! And Thanks, this recipe is going in the recipe books for sure!

My boys wanted brownies. I wanted simple. These were perfect! I used dark cocoa powder for the brownie and regular cocoa powder for the frosting. Very easy to make and yummy. It’s a keeper!!
