Hot Chocolate Cookies are thick, delicious chocolate cookie loaded with milk chocolate and mini marshmallows!
These Hot Chocolate Cookies are sweet, thick, chocolate cookies, that are so easy to make! The chocolate flavor is mild, but delicious, with ultra soft centers and slightly crisp edges. Imagine that creamy taste of hot chocolate in cookie form.
These aren’t overly chocolatey cookies. If you would like to up the chocolate factor here, you could sub in some cocoa powder for some of the hot chocolate mix. I’d do half and half.
This chocolate cookie recipe is definitely great for a snow day, but I’d serve these cookies all year long, especially at the end of the season when you want to try and use up your hot chocolate mix!

How do you make Hot Chocolate Cookies?
The dough for these cookies is super easy! It’s a simple cookie recipe that and you just add some hot chocolate mix straight into the dough! You don’t need to chill the dough, so these will be ready to eat in under 30 minutes!!
What Kind of Hot Chocolate Should I Use?
You can use any kind you want!! You can use the kind with mini marshmallows included, or not…because you add more marshmallows to the dough. I REALLY recommend you find the tiny dehydrated marshmallows (called Mallow Bits) They work perfectly in this recipe! I hav e found them at Target, Wal-Mart, my local supermarket, or on Amazon!
I linked to the ones I buy from Amazon in the shoppable image above!
What If I Can’t Find The Dehydrated Marshmallows?
If you can’t find them, I don’t recommend that you use Mini Marshmallows in their place, as they melt during baking and can create a mess.
What you could do is place a few marshmallows on top of the cookies when they are almost done baking so they will melt partially on top…just an idea.
Can You Use Milk Chocolate Chips Instead of Chopped?
Yes absolutely!! But as always, the better quality the chocolate, the better results (and flavor) you will have!

My kids go crazy for these cookies and I know you will too!
*I used Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate in this recipe, but you could use any brand!

These look delicious!! Can’t wait to try them!
These look amazing!!! One question: what effect do u think using Ovaltine vs. say, Swiss Miss, would have? Can’t wait to try these (with your marshmallow buttercream frosting, which I lovvvveee), thanks for always posting such amazing recipes!!
I think it would work totally fine!
oh.my.goodness.
I have to say, these weren’t my “first choice” when thinking of a recipe because I never have luck with marshmallows in recipes. But these….THESE COOKIES are heaven on a plate. OH.MY….. and that buttercream; well, that was what got me to try them. Buttercream, of any kind, is kind of like “my manna”….
These cookies rock! I baked them for only 8 minutes (don’t like crisp at all) and they were dense and soft and yummy and the frosting was just…gah! SO GOOD!!!!!!!!
They were the perfect “snow day” cookie…I also plan on changing the name to Smores cookies in the Summer so I can justify baking them all year 🙂
ooooh yessssss!
I’ve spent all day trying to hide from my chocolate craving but looking at those has me hungrier than ever.
From one NJ mom to another, I hear ‘ya! I can up you on on the Great Wolf – we went to Cocoa Key last long weekend…let’s just say it was very crowded and so very, very wet but my son had a blast and I guess that’s what counts. : ) These cookies look so comforting for this cold, long winter stretch. (First time visiting here…beautiful site!) : )
Yep, kids love the water parks, don’t they? I haven’t ever been to Coco Key…
never enough cookies with marshmallows. as soon as my GD oven gets fixed these will be baked.
LOL, I laughed so hard about Great Wold Lodge. We take the kids for ONE NIGHT about once a year and the think it’s the best thing ever… so mommy has to suck it up and deal!
Awesome cookies!
Oh, no, you iced them AND stuck a piece of chocolate on top??
*faints*
