Puppy Chow

Puppy Chow (Muddy Buddies) is a classic snack mix that everyone loves! Rice Chex coated in a silky mixture of chocolate and peanut butter all coated in powdered sugar. And I have to say, I’ve perfect the perfect coating…the exact right amount of peanut butter/chocolate and powdered sugar!

My Favorite Puppy Chow Recipe!

We have been making Puppy Chow for years! It’s one of those classic treats that is always a hit. I had it for the first time when I was young, and my friend’s mom made it for a birthday party. It’s such a classic that we make for parties, at the holidays, or as a fun snack for game nights.

Over the years we’ve created our own family recipe, while staying true to the original on the side of the box of Rice Chex (called Muddy Buddies). We tweaked the ingredient amounts to make sure every bite is perfect! If you’ve ever made the recipe on the side of the box, you know it’s a little lacking…we’re solving that problem today!

What Is Puppy Chow?

Ok, let me just first clarify for those who don’t know…this is NOT for dogs. I don’t know the origin of the recipe or the name, but Chex now prints their version on the side of their cereal box and rebranded them “Muddy Buddies”. I am sure this is to ensure folks don’t feed this to dogs.

It’s simply Rice Chex, coated in a melted mixture of peanut butter and chocolate, then coated again in powdered sugar! Simple, sweet, crunchy, and addicting!

Why Is It Called Puppy Chow?

I will only assume the inventor of this recipe called it Puppy Chow because of the kibble-type appearance. When you add less powdered sugar than I do, the pieces are a little more brown…more like…well…dog food.

I will reiterate that I didn’t come up with the name, it’s just what we have called it my whole life!

Shaking Puppy Chow with powdered sugar in a large bowl

Recipe Ingredients:

  • Rice Chex. You can also use Crispix cereal
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Peanut butter
  • Butter
  • Vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar

How To Make Puppy Chow:

This is such an easy process, and one that my kids enjoy making! Here are the simple steps:

  1. Place cereal in a large bowl.
  2. Melt butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips together. Add vanilla.
  3. Coat the cereal in the melted chocolate.
  4. Shake together the coated cereal and powdered sugar together until evenly coated.

Tips For Success:

  • It’s easiest to do in one large bowl with a lid. Pour the cereal into the bowl, coat with the melted chocolate mixture, stir gently to coat, and then pour the powdered sugar on top. Having a lid for the bowl allows you to place the lid on and shake it up right in the bowl. If you don’t have a bowl with a lid, you can use a large zip-top bag (I recommend at least a 2 gallon sized bag).
  • When you coat the cereal in the melted chocolate be as gentle as you can so you don’t break up all the cereal.
  • Stir using a rubber spatula to make sure you scrape up all the chocolate!
  • When you shake up the mixture to coat it in powdered sugar, do this in intervals. Shake it up, then open the bowl or bag and break apart any big clumps. Shake again and repeat. You ideally want every piece to be coated completely in chocolate/peanut butter and then powdered sugar.

How To Store Puppy Chow:

This is easy! Just airtight at room temp for 2 weeks!

You can refrigerate or freeze this, however it might get a little sticky as it thaws.

You can easily half this recipe if you don’t want such a large amount.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 cups Rice Chex
  • 1 1/2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Pour cereal into a large bowl (if the bowl has a lid, even better) and set aside.
  2. In a medium microwave-safe bowl heat together the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter for 30 seconds. Stir, and repeat heating until mixture is smooth. Stir in the vanilla.
  3. Pour the mixture on top of the cereal and gently stir until all the cereal is coated.
