I’m not one to pick favorites with my cookie recipes. There are just so many, it hardly seems fair! But today I’m officially singling out these birthday cake cookies as one of my best cookie creations. Zero regrets.

And the best part is, with these birthday cake chocolate chip cookies, now you can! This easy cookie recipe even uses some cake mix in the dough to really get that birthday taste! They’re irresistibly soft and filled with brown sugar, chunks of chocolate, rainbow sprinkles, and Golden Oreos.

I LOVE the ease of good ol’ Cake Mix Cookies. This recipe takes your classic cake mix recipe and piles on loads of birthday-worthy add-ins! Below is what you’ll need, and don’t forget to check out the recipe card for the full amounts.
- Butter: You can use salted or unsalted butter, just make sure it’s at room temperature.
- Brown Sugar: I highly recommend dark brown sugar for these birthday cake cookies, for the added moisture that comes with it.
- Eggs: Two eggs bind everything together. For best results, get your eggs at room temperature, too.
- Vanilla: These birthday cake cookies are one of the only occasions where I’m flexible on pure versus imitation vanilla. Synthetic vanilla actually lends a more authentic “birthday cake” flavor to the cookies! But use whichever kind you prefer.
- Baking Soda and Salt: Baking soda for extra leavening, and salt to enhance the flavors. Note that if you’re using salted butter to make the batter, you may want to adjust the amount of added salt here.
- Cake Mix: Choose your favorite brand of store-bought cake mix (see below). You’ll also need all-purpose flour in addition to the cake mix.
- Chocolate Chips: I use a combination of semi-sweet AND white chocolate chips for truly fully-loaded birthday cookies.

Any kind you’d like. These cake mix cookies turn out great with traditional white or vanilla cake mix, or even funfetti cake mix. You can even make yellow cake mix cookies. Whatever floats your birthday boat.
Preheat your ovens and line your baking sheets, ‘cause we’re about to get this cake mix cookie party started!
- Make the Dough: Cream together the butter and sugar until smooth, then add the eggs and vanilla. Next, mix in baking soda, salt, and flour, as well as the cake mix. Beat until just combined – be careful to not overmix the batter!
- Add Mix-Ins: Now, you’ll add in the sprinkles, chocolate chips, and chopped Oreo cookies. This is seriously one of my favorite cookie doughs of all time. Just look at those colors!
- Scoop: Once the dough comes together, use a cookie scoop to portion the dough onto a lined baking sheet. To get your cookies picture-perfect, you can press some additional chocolate chips and sprinkles into the tops before baking.
- Bake: Finally, bake the birthday cookies at 350ºF for about 10 minutes, until the edges are just barely golden. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a bit, before moving them to a wire rack.
Sure, you can. After the cake mix cookie dough comes together, store it airtight in a container or tightly wrapped in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Alternatively, the dough can be frozen for up to 4-6 months. Thaw it in the fridge before baking as usual.

- The secret to chewy cookies is the amount of moisture that goes into them. In this recipe, the butter, dark brown sugar, and eggs, combined with slightly underbaking the cookies all contribute to an extra chewy texture!
- Don’t overmix. This is another key point to ensure your cookies are soft and chewy, and not dense and tough. Be sure to only mix the dough until the ingredients are just combined, taking into account that you’ll be stirring in add-ins as well.

These Birthday Cake Chocolate Chip Cookies are an easy cookie recipe worth celebrating! They’re made from cake mix and loaded up with chocolate, Golden Oreos, and sprinkles.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
- In a bowl of your stand mixer cream butter and sugar together for about a minutes until light and fluffy. Add in eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth.
- With mixer on low add in baking soda, salt, flour and cake mix, stirring until mixture just comes together.
- With mixer still on low add in sprinkles, chocolate chips, and chopped Oreos. Stir until evenly incorporated.
- Using a large cookie scoop drop the dough onto the prepared baking sheet at least 2 inches apart. Press some extra chips and sprinkles on top if desired.
- Bake cookies for 9-10 minutes until edges are slightly golden.
- Allow to cool on baking sheet for 3 minutes and then transfer to wire rack to continue cooling.
