Buckeye Brownies

These Buckeye Brownies are an easy chocolate and peanut butter brownie recipe based on the popular midwest candy called Buckeye Balls aka Peanut Butter Balls.

Buckeye Brownies are an Easy Chocolate and Peanut Butter Brownie Recipe!

If there was ever a brownie recipe that got a standing ovation, this might be it. Combining peanut butter and chocolate tends to do that to people. I mean, it isn’t a classic flavor combo for nothing…and this is coming from a girl who just ate a spoonful of peanut butter with chocolate chips on it for an afternoon sweet treat. I mean I am kinda-sorta known for some pretty epic chocolate-peanut butter desserts like Peanut Butter Balls, Buckeye Brownie Cookies, and Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Cheesecake to name a few!

This Buckeye Brownie Recipe is chewy and fudgy with sweet peanut butter filling

What Are Buckeyes?

Buckeyes are popular in Ohio, as the Buckeye is the state tree! This brownie recipe is a spin on Buckeye Balls which are peanut butter balls that are only partially dipped in chocolate, leaving the peanut butter showing on the top. That way they look like the nuts from a Buckeye tree.

So long story short, this brownie recipe is just a fun spin on Buckeye Candy turning them into a rich, chewy, fudgy peanut butter and chocolate brownie!

How To Make Buckeye Brownies

How Do You Make Buckeye Brownies?

I started this recipe with a boxed brownie mix to make things easy. You could certainly use a brownie recipe from scratch if you prefer, just make sure the recipe is supposed to be baked in a 9×13 pan and the batter is on the thick side so you have enough brownie batter to hold the peanut butter filling.

  1. Once you’ve made your brownie batter, stir in some chopped peanuts to give a little extra crunch. You can leave the chopped peanuts out if you don’t like nuts in your brownies, no problem!
  2. Then mix together some peanut butter and sweetened condensed milk. This makes a magic peanut butter filling.
  3. Press half the brownie batter into a greased 9×13 pan, and then pour the peanut butter filling on top of that! Drop the remaining brownie batter onto the filling and lightly press it in. When these bake they will look pretty and marbled on top!
  4. Bake them for about 25 minutes until the edges are set, and then let them cool!

Can You Freeze These Brownies?

Yes, absolutely! Buckeye Brownies can easily be frozen. Let them cool completely, and you can freeze them in the pan, or cut them into bars and freeze them like that. Just make sure they are airtight and they will be great for up to a month! Let them thaw out at room temperature for eating.

  • If you freeze them in bars, just place them in a flat layer in a zip-top bag, with a piece of parchment paper separating the stacks. Or you can also freeze them in a large plastic container.
  • If you choose to freeze them in the pan, allow them to cool and cover the pan in foil. Cut them after they have thawed out!

Buckeye Brownies are the Perfect Brownie Recipe for Peanut Butter Lovers!

These brownies come together so quickly, but are really a showstopper! The thick peanut butter filling sandwiched in between the two brownie layers is sweet and creamy. And like I said before, you can absolutely omit the chopped peanuts if you don’t want any crunch.

  1. Shelly,
I was a bit skeptical but now that I’ve done it, I totally get the ‘swim in it’ reference. I would make one change however…there aren’t nearly enough nuts in that recipe so I doubled them and sprinkled the top too. Heaven! Thanks for sharing.

  2. Christina @ ovenadventures

I just discovered buckeyes like a year go. I can not believe they have hidden from me for so long. It was probably for the best though because I could live on them. These brownies are totally fab-u-lous

  3. These are SO RICH they just about blow the top of your head off!! If you like that kind of thing – these are def for you. If not, steer clear 😉

  4. These are in the oven right now! Is the batter supposed to be very very thick? My brownie mix on its own called for more oil and some water, but I just followed your recipe. I assume the milk and peanut butter will add moisture. Either way, I am sure they will be amazing!

  5. Made these for the weekend! They were awesome and gone in less than 24 hours. Everything that I’ve made from this site has been ah-ma-zing!

  6. I made these yesterday for a family gathering and they were a HUGE hit. Thanks for sharing this recipe. I will definitely be making it again. I didn’t have any peanuts, so I omitted them, but I cannot wait to add them next time.

  7. So a friend send me over with rumors of chocolate sex. Well…buckeye brownies and Damon…same thing. Looks delish! I’ll be sticking around to see what other sinful things you post 🙂

  8. Stephanie @ Macaroni and Cheesecake

There are no words to describe how amazing these look! So heavenly! And the peanut butter and condensed milk filling, genius!

  9. bridget {bake at 350}

My 13 y.o. STILL goes to bed at 8:30. Mama needs some alone time….well, and maybe some quality time with the husband. Since my bedtime is 9, I need that 30 minutes. 😉

These brownies look IN-credible, Shelly! Are you sure you can’t move back to Texas? The house next door to us is for sale and I’ll happily be your taste-tester.

  10. I love buckeyes! My Ohio-native hubby got me hooked on them (although I use SunButter in mine because of my allergy, which he hates lol). These brownies look amazing!!
